Eskenazi Health Expands Its Commitment to Sustainability with New LiveRoof® Installation

Installed 2025 | Indianapolis, IN

In 2025, Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana expanded its long-standing commitment to sustainability with the installation of a 10,593 square foot LiveRoof® green roof.

Designed with six custom-grown plant mixes, the rooftop combines sedums, flowering perennials, and grasses to create a vibrant, biodiverse landscape that enhances both building performance and visual appeal. The project utilizes the LiveRoof® Deep system along with RoofEdge® edging, supporting a broader plant palette and long-term durability.

Eskenazi Health has long been recognized as a leader in sustainable healthcare design. In 2015, the hospital became Indiana’s first LEED® Gold certified healthcare facility — a milestone that reflected its dedication to environmental stewardship, energy efficiency, and patient well-being.

Founded in 1859 as Indianapolis City Hospital during a smallpox epidemic, Eskenazi Health is Indiana’s oldest public healthcare system. Throughout its history, the institution has continually evolved to serve the community, including becoming the first hospital in the United States to coordinate ambulance dispatch through two-way radio communication in 1943.

Today, the addition of a Living Roof continues that legacy of innovation.

Beyond its aesthetic impact, the green roof helps reduce stormwater runoff, mitigate urban heat island effects, and protect the building envelope — all while contributing valuable green space within the urban environment. The diverse plant palette also provides seasonal interest and habitat opportunities for pollinators and birds.
